Una domenica a Bologna

Una domenica a Bologna
Cinema Jolly

A Sunday in Bologna

“Sunday is the traditional day of rest and worship, so what better place to spend Sunday in Bologna than in the cinema enjoying great movies?”. That’s the invitation from director Alexander Payne and Neil McGlone, the curators of this section that proposes only films with the word 'Sunday' in the title (from
Domenica d'agosto to Sunday to Gai dimanche...). Naturally, it will be held for the entire Sunday of the festival at Cinema Jolly. “So take your seats and enjoy a warm sunny Sunday in the cathedral where we particular faithful come regularly to worship: the cinema”.

Ritrovati e Restaurati (ovvero l'arte di uccidere)
Cinema Lumière - Sala Mastroianni, ore 16 / Cinema Arlecchino, ore 16.30 / Piazza Maggiore, ore 21.45

Recovered and Restored (or the art of killing)
If you’re not a fan of fencing then you probably won’t have heard of him, but he was a true gentleman and the master-of-arms of Italian cinema. A formidable swordsman, Agesilao Greco instructed many of the heroes of adventure and war films in how to handle a sword against on-screen enemies. We remember him with the 1913 film L'assalto fatale, in which he starred, and through the stories of his descendent Renzo Musumeci Greco. Another type of duel, this time with pistols, decides the fates of the protagonists of Johnny Guitar, a western of baroque colours and harrowing romance, where evil (as black as the night) is defeated and good (as white as an unforgettable muslin dress) finds a sort of troubled happiness: Joan Crawford dominates Nicholas Ray’s film, with a face carved out of wood and pain. Nobody kills anyone in Trouble in Paradise, however Lubitsch’s stylistic foil vanquishes every sentimental illusion: this 1932 film is the archetype, the pinnacle, the crème de la crème of sophisticated comedy, and the new restoration returns a magical breath to the art deco spaces.

Documenti e documentari
Sala Auditorium, ore 15 e 16

Jean Vigo Recovered
His work has left an indelible impression on generations of filmmakers and spectators around the world. And yet we have never seen him quite like this. In addition to the Jacques Rozier’s documentary dedicated to Vigo, which reunited many of the members of the ‘Vigo band’ still living and active in 1964, we will also see images from
L'Atalante that Vigo decided not to include in the film: eighty minutes of footage (a little less than the film itself), with live commentary from section curator Bernard Eisenschitz. Many people have been enchanted by the beauty of these ‘discarded’ images. Langlois wrote: “I have seen some superb things that Vigo cut, because what he was striving for was absolute simplicity”. The footage, excluded from the new restoration presented at Cinema Ritrovato – which has returned the film to its original version – is nonetheless fundamental in understanding the story of the film’s production and the inspiration that drove its director (we will even see Michel Simon smoking from his belly button!). At 6:15 pm in Cinema Arlecchino, there will be another of Vigo’s masterpieces, Zéro de conduite. It too has been returned to its original form, as desired by Vigo, thanks to a new restoration which for the first time has been based on the original negative. It will be preceded by La Natation par Jean Taris, Champion del France, a short film about swimming champion Jean Taris, commissioned from Vigo by Germaine Dulac, of which the director was particularly fond of the sequences shot underwater.

1897. Year Two of Cinematography: Italy, vues Lumière
The engine of the 'time machine' has once again been cranked, ready to bring us back to 1897, year two in the history of cinema, when the Lumières were the unrivalled leaders and Alexandre Promio was the greatest filmmaker of the year. This section, curated by Mariann Lewinsky, gets under way with one of its geographically-themed programmes, the vues Lumière dedicated to Italy (in the next few days, also Egypt, Japan and Palestine). Followed by La guerra e il sogno di Momi, from the animation programme of our 1917 section: the result of the friendship between legendary pioneer of cinema Segundo de Chomón and Giovanni Pastrone, it has an animated dream sequence that dulls the nightmare of war with subtle humour and a bittersweet lightness.

But look at how Sirk immerses 'his' Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman in a lavish score of colours, each one loaded with hypnotic emotional resonance. See it and you will never again want to renounce the optical pleasure that is Sirk, to be continued in coming days with Written on the Wind and All That Heaven Allows.

Registi 'ritrovati': Augusto Genina e Helmut Käutner

Sala Scorsese, ore 14.15, 16.15 e 18.15 – Piazzetta Pasolini, ore 22.15

'Rediscovered' Directors: Augusto Genina and Helmut Käutner
Carbon arc projection in Piazzetta Pasolini: Addio giovinezza!

Il Cinema Ritrovato is always an occasion to discover the work of filmmakers who in different ways are ‘unknown’. Without doubt, one of these is Helmut Käutner, “an escape artist who tried to reinvent cinema and himself each time he started a film”, writes section curator Olaf Möller. One of the eight films proposed is
Unter den Brücken, shot between 1944 and the end of the war in a Berlin still only partially destroyed by bombardments. For many people another surprise will be Augusto Genina, the prestigious and very European Italian filmmaker active from the '20s until the '50s, who then disappeared from collective memory. The section, curated by Emiliano Morreale, continues with L’a ssedio dell’Alcazar, an Italo-Spanish co-production about the Spanish Civil War, which won Genina an award at the Venice Film Festival, and the famous Prix de beauté, in which he directed the diva Louise Brooks. Genina will also be the protagonist of our first evening in Piazzetta Pasolini: with a carbon arc projection of his Addio giovinezza! (the 1918 version). A unique experience that brings back to life the true magic of the first cinematographic screenings.
