Lezioni di cinema: Thierry Frémaux, Dario Argento, Mitchum e la Tv Sala Auditorium – Laboratori delle Arti UniBo, ore 12, 16 e 17
“Mi
In giornata altre
e i suoi schermi (tema ancora caldo, considerate le recenti polemiche
suoi film.
Lessons in Cinema: Thierry Frémaux, Dario Argento, Mitchum and Tv "I
like television, especially since it’s easy to turn off”. The words of
Robert Mitchum, this year’s headlining star – in fact, we chose his
magnetic gaze as the image of the festival. And yet even Mitchum had to
give in to the small screen: Philippe Garnier, one of the curators of
this section dedicated to the American star, will comment on a series of
television appearances made by the actor. During the day, we will also
have another two unmissable lessons in cinema: Thierry Frémaux, director
of the Cannes Film Festival and Institut Lumière in Lyon, along with
Gian Luca Farinelli will discuss Le Cinéma et ses écrans,
the cinema and its screens (a very relevant theme, considering the
recent controversy surrounding Netflix at Cannes this year); our second
appointment will be with director Dario Argento, the Italian master of
horror in conversation with Emiliano Morreale, talking about his cinema
and his films.

genere, accanto all'autore Jacques Thorens e all'editore Lorenzo
Flabbi.

talent of Italian cinema.

Mahieddine Moussaoui, esponente dell’indipendenza algerina e stimolo

mythical place of art, culture and the promotion of Arab and African
cinema, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. The

È Mädchen in Uniform
(Ragazze in uniforme) di Léontine Sagan. Colette scrive i sottotitoli
volume La vagabonda dello schermo. Colette e il cinema (Esed
ra,
2015), che sarà presentato prima del film.
Colette and Cinema: Mädchen in Uniform Colette defined Mädchen in Uniform (Girls
in Uniform) by Léontine Sagan as “an absolute masterpiece of tact and
measure”. In fact, Colette even wrote the French subtitles for the film
(we will see the German version accompanied by her subtitles). However,
the connection does not stop there, as the film, a fundamental title in
the history of gay and lesbian cinema, has similarities to Claudine,
Colette’s well-known series of novels set in a boarding school and not
lacking in Sapphic connotation. Therefore, Colette’s transgressive aura
accompanied the release of the film, helping to ensure a warm reception
in France. The film will be introduced by Paola Palma, an expert scholar
in Colette and author of La vagabonda dello schermo. Colette e il cinema (Esedra, 201
5),
which will be presented before the screening.

War of the Divas: Mildred Pierce and Ich küsse Ihre Hand, Madame This year at the festival, two great divas clash in an imaginary cinematic battle. In one corner, Marlene Dietrich in Ich küsse Ihre Hand,
Madame by Robert Land: Marlene is not yet ‘Marlene’, however her
magnetic personality nonetheless dominates the film. “We can already see
traces of the later cruel Lola-Lola”, wrote Vittorio Martinelli, in
this “pre-Sternberg Marlene, a Marlene exuding a natural and shameless
sensuality”. We will see her again in the western Rancho Notorious. The diva in the other corner, and straight out of the western Johnny Guitar, is Joan Crawford, who gives us another unforgettable representation of a woman and a mother in Michael Curtiz’s Mildred Pierce: she too towers masterfully over the f
ilm, on
the cusp between her resplendent sex objects of the Thirties and the roles of her mature years, carved in wood and pain.

Ritrovati e Restaurati in Piazza Maggiore: D.A.
Monterey Pop
è il primo rockumentary della storia. D.A. Pennebaker – e i suoi
in San Francisco ("Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair"),
Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar. Jimi

A lungo considerato perduto, Die kleine Veronika
Oltre a
documenta luoghi viennesi ormai scomparsi.
Wench
AA, del 1900 circa.
Carbon Arc Projection: Die kleine Veronika Rediscovered and Restored Preceded by a Gala Screening with a Wench AA projector (c. 1900) For a long time considered lost, Die kleine Veronika
by Robert Land, one of the great ignored directors of German-language
cinema from the interwar period, can once again be admired on the big
screen in the restoration by Filmarchiv Austria. In addition to
confirming Land’s mastery, the film, which
incorporates a lot of real life footage, documents places long since
disappeared. Probably the most beautiful silent Austrian film, it can be
admired in the magical setting of a carbon arc projection in Piazzetta
Pasolini, accompanied by Florian Kmet on guitar. As a prelude to the
film, a special screening of some enchanting films from the Filmarchiv
Austria collection, using a hand cranked Wench AA film projector (c.
1900).

- Fuori programma: replica del documentario Jean Douchet. L'enfant agité / Out-of-programme: repeat of the documentary Jean Douchet. L'enfant agitéSala Auditorium – Laboratori delle Arti UniBo, ore 21.30
Replica
(Jordan Mintzer). >>> An
out-of-programme repeat screening of the documentary dedicated to Jean
Douchet, a master critic, one of the souls of “Cahiers du cinéma”. Like a
professor, he has taught l'amour du cinéma like few others and “shown
that the true path to understanding cinema lies less in wracking our
brains than in simply sitting back in a theatre, relaxing and opening up
our minds and hearts” (Jordan Mintzer).

Piccinini, the first part of the Animiamoci: il mondo di Luzzati e Gianini laboratory for children (part two will take place on Wednesday 28th), and the cinema lesson Elogio all’imperfezione; a rediscovery of the works of the two great artists through the critical reflecti

- 1897: Cinema Anno Due. Alexandre Promio: la serie dei travelogue di Paul Génard / 1897: Year Two of Cinematography. Alexandre Promio: the Paul Génard travelogue series
Come quelli ripresi in Egitto (allora Turchia
>>> Alexandre
Promio was undoubtedly the most important filmmaker of the year 1897.
He made countless films, exploring a great variety of genres, including
the travelogue. Like those shot in Egypt (then the Turkey of the East),
which we can admire in a series edited together in 1960 by Paul Génard: a
true artistic composition that mixes vues from the catalogue with ‘out
of catalogue’ vues to successfully convey both the cameraman’s keen eye
and the aesthetic and poetic dimension of the images.
- Augusto Genina: un italiano in Europa. Maddalena in Technicolor / Augusto Genina: an Italian in Europe. Maddalena in Technicolor
film.
>>> Genina’s most important melodrama. As part of a joke, a prostitute called Maddalena
is chosen to enact the role of the Virgin Mary in a religious Easter
ceremony. The townspeople, who believed her to be holy, discover her
true identity and end up stoning her, still dressed as the Madonna,
during the procession. “One of the purest and most essential films ever
made about sex, religion and femininity”, wrote Enrico Ghezzi. We will
see a vintage 35mm print of the French Technicolor version, which adds
power and spiritual force to the film in comparison to the better
well-known black and white print.
